The American Dream 1950's

As we've studied the plenty of the 1950's with it's fashion, gender roles, and baby boom generations we've found ourselves very puzzled as to how we may have been influenced or diverted by the decade. After learning about the 1950's would you enjoy or have difficulty living in the era?

  1. I would have difficulty living in this time because me being half white and half mexican either way my family would have been isolated and would have lived in the ghettos. Now even if i had been all white I wouldn't have like it because everyone was too phony and didn't say or d what they intended. I might have a ghetto family but at least their one I can count on.

  2. I think you got the point if the lesson, what you call phony, I think translates into a generation of conformaty. You want to be seen as an individual?

  3. Well if I don't include my race...
it would be quite easy, for the most part anyway. My mom is so old fashioned, with the roles of women. The women are always in the kitchen while my brother mows the law. I'm pressured into being this girl who reminds me of what we are learning about, The "all american" perfect thing. I'm used to having to obey these ridiculous standards of living. It would just be living a lie for me though. And when I read about how women who don't want to do the generic life, they are considered to have a mental illness. That is outrageous... but my mother I'm sure my mother thinks I have a mental illness because I'm not going to do the whole "children and house wife", I'm going to the Army. So even though I'm used to that type of life style, it wouldn't be easy to conform, but I know I would be forced into it and be who society would want me to be... until I get on my own anyway.

  4. I think it would be difficult for me because, I wouldn't be able to stand being a conformist like everyone else, I'd be one of the kids that got sent to canada because I set a building on fire or something haha. I'd wanna be able to do what I want and see the world not stay in the safety of some tiny town.

  5. Man what the heck? I posted before but I guess it didn't go through.

Anyway, I would probably like it. I would enjoy having my mom do everything for me. Laundry, cook, clean, everything. But, I wouldn't want to have to play the roll of the perfect child. I mean, what teenager doesn't want the chance to rebel a little bit? But over all I would probably like it.

  6. I dont think i would like the idea of the small isolated suburban community where everyone knows everything about everyone...Like kaydee said, i would like to have my mom do everything, but i dont think i would like the idea of being a perfect child and obeying every rule... Also i dont really care for what society has to say about me or my family so i wouldnt keep the appearances of being always perfect and happy.

  7. I don't think I would enjoy it. With all the new ways of raising kiss, too many of us would take advantage and ignore respect. That would bring out a lot of jerks. I bet even more than we see nowadays. And all the jerks at school don't make me very happy. So I wouldn't want to deal with a new hype of annoying teenagers, possibly the 1950's "scenester" or "d-bag"

  9. I would like to live in the era because the family seems so happy and the kids don't worry about much. I would have problems though, with the way they do everything in the same order and it seems that there is no excitement or curosity in anyone. The era does seem very boring.

  10. I think life would be relatively easy, if I were to live during the 1950's because everything revolved around the children. It'd be nice to get what you wanted, when you wanted it. Although I would have to wonder whether or not I would learn the value of money and the value of earning what you have, rather than it just being handed to you. There are many pros and cons to living in this era. Personally, I would enjoy it, whether I was a child or a mother because when I grow older I would like to become a housewife.

  11. I don't think that i would be able to live throughout their type of lifestyle because I'm asian. Also, everyone seemed like they were so perfect, since it was the "american dream" to do. I know I'm not perfect, so i think it would be hard for me to fit in. My mom is also not the "stay at home and cook and clean all day" type of woman. She goes to work, and works overtime for up to 12 hrs sometimes. Things would have to dramatically change if i was to be able to live in that kind of era, and i don't think i would be able to handle it..

  12. After reading and learning about the 1950s era, I think it would be difficult to live in this time period. Although I am white and would have had more privledges than many other types of people such as african americans, I would have a hard time living with the shame of how my kind treats people of non white. A time known for many historical events such as (classic cars)and radical fashion trends, I would still find it hard to cope with a wrong inhumane way of living in segregation and racial tension. I would struggle to look foward and put all the shame brought upon me and many others behind us as the years passed. This is my opinion on the 1950's era.
