They proposed separatism because they believed blacks could not be successful in a country dominated by whites. I personally do not agree with this whatsoever. It has taken time for blacks to be viewed as equals in America, but it HAS happened. Now days, a black person has the same opportunities to succeed as a white person. And in college, those opportunities are even much higher because they are a minority. Choosing to leave the country or create "black states" does not unify the United States and would create even more racism. Blacks would be completely seperate from the other races, and this would only encourage ignorant people to hate them.
Obviously Martin Luther King Jr had gotten the civil right bill passed by congress without violence. Because on the outside and in history, we see him as a loving, godly, non violent, righteous man. But with these black separatists...hold on a minute... let's analyze this... Black, ok... Separatists, NOT GOOD. African Americans have been struggling to get integrated. Isn't that a bit contradicting of what Martin Luther King Jr wanted as well as the majority of the African American population? Why would they even put that label upon themselves in the first place. they say "black power", but that seems more of empowerment to themselves and not the goal to be treated equally. Like they are better or something. So NO, I don't agree with these Black Separatists.
I don't agree because the Civil Rights Movement was about everyone being equal and having the same rights. Black separatists are hypocritical because having everything separate obviously didn't work out when the the whites wanted it to, so trying to be separated because that's what blacks want will still cause complications with whites and blacks. For some blacks wanting to be separate is like saying they didn't care about the Civil Rights Movement and everything that it stood for.
Martin Luther King Jr's ability to get civil right's bill passed by congress should not have been so hard. I don't think violence would have helped the movement very much. Selfdefense is necessary for the African American people that were being taken and killed, but violence would have only made congress angrier. Jordan Sato-Sterni
They believed that Colored people could not excel in the White world and personaly I agree with this. I believe that as long as the black community kept quiet whites believed that they were superior to every other person that wasn't white. Until Rosa Parks finally took the stand on the Montgomery Bus Boycott black communities weren't being respected because they were colored.
African Americans proposed to be separate. I do not really agree with that because where would they go? How would this have worked? America is about freedom and equality. That's what others were also fighting for, it was just a matter of time and faith. -tim dowling
