Colonial Differences

40% of the population were slaves

How did the different social and economic characteristics of the northern and southern colonies later play a crucial, and tragic, role in American history?

  1. Back in 1750 the puritains were a very religious group who had wanted to get other communities to believe live life the way they did. In my opinion they were very small minded people because they acted as if there was only one way of doing things, and if it had nothing to do with God then it was evil. This way of thinking caused European settlers to find land else where.Although the Puritains were very successfull economically. Which was based on agriculture, fishing, wool production and trading.
The Southern Colonies were productive as well, they made a profit from tabacco and corn. This was during the same time that they began to have use African-Americans as slaves. This brought controversy to the Southern Colonies because the African-Americans weren't being human rights. So in conclusion, the Puritains views on religion caused others to start their own colonies. And the Southern Colonies need for workers caused them to use African-Americans as slaves.

I think what really brought America down was the slaves in the south, and the religion in northern colony.Because of the slaves there was a big gap in the social classes, you were either rich,or you were poor.In the south there was just debt for the poor which caused them to start making people become slaves, and then they out-reached the slavery to Africa. So the plantation owners became really rich by using a LOT of slaves to do all the work.

Religion brought problems to the northern colonies. For example the Salem witch trials, they killed a lot of people. The government was controlled by the church, especially in Massachusetts where you could be killed for not going to church.

  4. In 1750, majority of people with political power and wealth, were those who took themselves into the planting and farming industry. This was a simple task to complete because of the fact that it was hugely a slave job, so business was seemingly always good. Of course, all this was too much for the slaves and this stirred drama to the Southern Colonies because the slaves were not being treated as they should be. Religions also raged a war. This was between the mostly Puritan North and the Protestant South. This, along with the slavery issue caused a lot of separation and led to further expansion of the colonies for various tolerances to be achieved.

  5. I believe that the colonies although they wanted freedom were still very much controled by their religion. I think this brought them down because it caused many religious seperations and differences. For instance Anne hutchinson wanted a separation of church and state but the colonies leaders wouldn't hear of it because it was against their ways. All together I think this led to the American revolution because the people were tired of being controlled by both the king and the church. Also The differences between the religions in the north adn south and the different kinds of rulings like self-governing and a royal colony led to different beliefs and conflicts.

  6. The Northern Colonies were founded by English Puritans. The Puritans ran the Northern Colonies by religion and allowed no other religion in those four colonies. Now, in the Southern Colonies, slavery was the big thing. People bought slaves to do all the hard labor that they couldn't do by themselves.
Now, later, this hurt both very hard because Colonists started questioning why religion should run the government and why religion should choose things like who should get to vote and who can be on a council. In the South, well they had a civil war to deal with down the road.

  8. i think that religion really brought down the northern colonies. the northern colinies mainly wanted freedom but religion created many problems. people began to argue and have religious differences which everntually lead to the american revolution because people were tired of being ruled by a king and the church. i think slavery was what really brought down the southern colonies. you were either really rich or you were poor, which created tension between the 2 social classes.

  9. The northern and southern colonies had various social and economic differences, all of which eventually contributed to a tragic event in American history. The northern colonies were composed of individuals that mainly came from the eastern part of England.

  11. Francheska, your right! Cotton was even more important after the use of Indigo became popular.

  12. The northern colonies were very religious. Maybe even a little too religious. Religious differences caused many problems. this led to revolt against the idea of church ruling government. Just like the Anne Hutchinson case.
