During his life, he never allowed a portrait of himself to be made, so his true appearance remains unknown. |
Daniel Shays was a farmer turned revolutionary. Describe the issues that inspired him to speak out against the Articles of Confederation. How could the authorities have handle his concerns? Why would people outside of his state of Massahuchetts be frightened by his story of rebellion?
It might have frightened other people because the terrible incident convinced many that they needed new national government. Everyone was panicked and many farmers lost everything: their farms, land, and homes.

An issue that inspired Daniel Shays to speak against the Articles of Confederation was when he and other farmers had borrowed money from wealthy store owners, and could not pay their debts in hard money. When Shays went to the legislature for extra time to pay off his debts and they said no. Although this led to a dispute between the farmers and the malitia, I think that things would have gone better if the lagislature would of tried to reasoned with the farmers in debt. And people outside of the state of Massachusetts were frightened by his story of rebellion because it showed disoreder in the social class. The farmers were stepping over higher authority and were taking things into their own hands.

ReplyDeleteHe started this rebellion because courts would take away property and put people in jail that owed money to wealthier people. This was mainly farmers, also he had just come back from the war with no money and the court didnt give him any chance to get money. The court could have listened to the farmers and given them more time to earn money or helped the farmers out with earning the money.People were afraid of this rebellion because they feared that more poor people would have a rebellion against the wealthier people. They feared a bad government, and less money.
The Rebellian began August 29th 1786 and a year later over 1000 followers were arrested.
ReplyDeletePeople feared that the revolutions democratic inpulse had gotten out of hand.

Tot, elaborate on this post.
ReplyDeleteDaniel shays had issues with the bank about paying his money back on time, he asked the bank for more time and they said no. Them rejecting him made him dislike the government and other farmers listened because they have the same situation. So they listened to him and were inspired by him and listened to his thoughts and philosophy. what the authorities could have done different is let him have more time or implement a penalty and sense they did not this sparked shays rebellion.

During the Revolutionary War, Daniel Shays already had very little money to begin with so after the war its no surprise that he ended up broke. Because of his state, he and several other farmers had to borrow money from wealthy neighbors or store owners, due to the lack of banks, in order to survive. They had very little time to pay back their debts and as a result had their property taken away from them or were sentenced to debtor's jail. He and the farmers asked their legislation to give them more time but were neglected and as a result the farmers, commanded by Shays, revolted. They should not have neglected Shays, however, and should have given more time to him and his farmers; if this had happened, no rebellion would have occured. People outside the state would have been frightened by this because they feared that their land would be taken, disorder would commence, and unnecessary blood shed would fill the nation. In an odd way, Shays's Rebellion was a good thing because it revealed the flaws of the Articles of Confederation and helped give birth to new and improved state of government.

Shay's issue is that there was no way that he and his fellow farmers could pay back their depts properly. As a result, the farmers were losing their land or going to deptor's jail. The authorities could have had him send his complaints to the government. The other states were fearful because they feared a "Follow the leader" effect if their citizens find something to complain about such as their depts.

Daniel Shays had issues with the government because when he needed money to pay off debts and asked the bank for loan they rejected his request. If the legislative gave Shays and the other farmers more time then maybe the rebellion wouldn't have happened. As a result of the rebellion, The Articles of Confederation were seen as flawed. Without Shays Rebellion, the government would have stayed the same.

Shays spoke out against the Articles of Confederation because he and many other farmers were in debt. The authorities did not allow them to be reasonable with their debt. They wanted the farmers to pay them right away in such little time. The authorities could have been reasonable to understand what the farmers are going through. Everyone else may have been scared because they knew that the government was not doing what they were supposed to do. Do what is right for the people.

ReplyDelete-Describe the issues that inspired Daniel Shay to speak out against the Articles of Confeferation?
Once the war ended and Daniel had no money; he had no other choice but to borrow from his wealthy neighbors. When it came time to pay his debts to his neighbors, he had no money to do so. Shay begged the legislature for more time before he would be sent to jail, but they denied his request. Daniel Shay felt the legislature was arrogant and not responsive to the people. The denying of his request for more time to pay his debts, tempered by his experienced in the American Revolutionary war, is what inspired Daniel Shay to speak out against the Articles of confederation.
-How did authorities handle his concerns?
They ignored his concerns and continued to seize property and put people in jail that did not have the ability to pay their debts.
-Why would people outside his state be frightened by his story of rebellion?
The people outside the state of Massachusetts may have been frightened by Daniel Shay's rebellion because they were far removed from the issues he was protesting, both geographically and personally; and they saw his protest as an act of social disorder that threatened the stability of the government
Well i think that Daniel Shay spoke out because he realised that him nor the other farmers could pay their debts. He spoke out because he wanted a change. As for other states, they realised that their rebellion could hurt them too. Also itmade them realise the need for a new national government and that the Articles of Confederation had failed miserably. The authorities had completely ignored the farmers concerns and kept seizing their property. I think that they should not have done this and should have been more reasonable. Especially since they gave them such little time to pay off the debts. I think they should have understood what they farmers were going through.

to elaborate my post.
ReplyDeleteWell after so many people followed it got to chaotic and things got very much out of hand and a lot of the followers got arrested for mayhem or disturbing the peace.
This is why people feared the revolution.
