During the 1950's some Americans came to believe that the suburban lifestyle brought about conformity. There are several ways that this was dealt with. Some expressed this frustrating change through literature, music, poetry, and art. Many books and poems were written expressing negative aspects of the current culture. A great deal of people wanted to live outside the strict society rules. Many Americans feared a nuclear attack from Russia and built bomb shelters in basements. The Beat Generation was created and they grew long hair, beards, and often wore mismatched casual clothing. Berets were common signs of nonconforming. They had underground, jazz style music. Many of the middle class rules values were rejected.

The men wore hair styles and clothing that were against the rules. The kids saw movies they weren't supposed to. People did drugs and listened to music that was underground at the time. Brandon Jones
ReplyDeleteDuring the 1950's there was a certain way everyone was supposed to look and act, which was called the "Suburban Lifestyle". Everyone wanted to achieve the American Dream during this time. The American Dream was to have the "perfect" life. Many people did not want to conform and they began to rebel. Film-makers began to make movies about teenagers being very rebelious. For example: the movie Rebel Without A Cause was about teenagers that would smoke, race cars, and fight. Then musicians began to write music that didn't sound like all the other songs people would listen to. The songs would have references to sex and drugs. Authors began to write books focusing on the negative things that were happening during this time. As people began watching the movies and listening to the music, they were influenced by what they were seeing and hearing; so they began to change the way they acted and looked. I believe that the 50's was definitly a time of rebellion and change.
