  1. yes it is american to let people starve. in america we are very willing to lend a helping hand to anyone that is in trouble more so than other countries but if you are not willing to take advantage of the resources that are given to you then why should we care if you are poor?

back in the 1900s their were no social programs to help you if you were "starving" you, your spouse, parents, and even young children worked to help provide for the family basics because the average job was underpaid so you did not on your own make enough to provide for your family. these days their are so many ways to help you get a job or even ways for you to provide for your family when you dont work. so yes it is american to let people starve.

  2. It's hard to admit, but yes it is American to let people starve. It is America's job to present the opportunity(after all we are the "land of opportunity"). Once we've done this, we've done our job. It is up to those who want it to go after it and get it.Just like in school. Teachers are there to present the information. It is up to us students to take it and run with it in order to have a successful future. No one is stopping them or us.

In a way yes it is American to let people starve, because the modern day american is not the same patriot, we as a people have strayed away from our founding father's beliefs and have choosen to be greedy and look out for onself not the community in general. Yet America has always let someone starve wether it was the Native Americans or the African Americans and in this case the immigrants. So yes it is American to let people starve

  4. America does let it's people starve. The stereotype of the poor being lazy is something that I hear a lot. A lot of it is from people who live in middle and upper class households. America is privileged and it most who have a rags to riches story, anyone who is an immigrant or is the first generation American will tell you that living in America is an opportunity that should be taken advantage of. I believe America starves immigrants of opportunity. Many immigrants come to America without an education or some type of education that isn't up to par with the standards that they have. Even the educated have left behind their life in their countries to live in America. Opportunity is a word I associate with America and opportunities are given to Americans, not immigrants. In my opinion the poor are suppressed by the government and it's people. I am a first generation Filipino American and opportunity has been given to me, my mother is educated and we are forced to live under the poverty level because she cannot receive the benefits that I can and the education that she received in the Philippines isn't for whatever reason valid in America. One doesn't need to be an immigrant to be starved of opportunity. A privilege of being an American resident is the ability it receive welfare. This system allows people to have financial support funded by the government. This system doesn't require a return of receipts and how the money is used is not tracked. People receiving welfare benefits aren't required to submit to drug testing and don't have to follow guidelines that may be set out to them. This system is flawed and allowed many Americans to take advantage of it for the time that the benefits are valid. This is where the stereotype of the poor being lazy comes from and does this only mean that the poor are only lazy? To some people all poor are lazy, to me most of the poor aren't and I do know there are numerous amounts of people who exploit flawed welfare system. Who is really the lazy group? The poor or the government. America does allow it's poor to starve.

  5. yes it is american to let people starve because people nowadays only care about themselves and not whats best for others. modern day americans do not look out for people other than themselves. they tend to be more greedy or selfish rather than helpful or giving. america is a dog eat dog country and only the strongest would survive and the weak would be forced to suffer or starve.

  6. I think in a way it is American to let people starve because our country can only go so far to help everyone that is in need of food. If they are in need for food they are probably in need a roof over their head too. And can we provide everyone with a house over their head that does not have one? No. Americans could improve their ways to help the needy and provide them with more but we can do very minimal when there are so many Americans out there that are starving.

  7. Yes. It is definitely American to let people starve. Most people today are narcissistic and dont care about anyone else. They want everything that they have to themselves and even if they have too much of everything, they won't share it. Americans look at homeless people and say "oh whatever. It was probably their fault anyways." That portrays selfishness and carelessness. Even if it was their fault, no ones deserves to starve. And as they let poor people starve, deep down they are starving themselves inside.

  8. Josh-good question! Is the American government lazy? In the gilded age this type of "hands-off" government was known as laisezz faire government, does it continue to be true today class?

  9. I don't think its necessarily American that lets people strave. Its the people who don't know how to manage their money well or the ones who take the easy way out and depend on others to help them out. People blame the government for lay offs and earily retirement when yes, thats to blame too but they have to figure out other ways to make an income. Find new jobs or cut back on expenses or not buy things that they don't really need. Like the other day in class when we were talking about food stamps and how the government had to put limitations on them because people were using them for other things other than food. Thats sad that a person or family would rather go without food on their table just to go gamble or spend it other items that in time won't matter.
So its not the governments fault for what people decide to do wrongly with their money.

  10. I believe that it is American to let people starve because all American people have the opportunity to make something of themselves and build a career, so that they wont have to starve. It is up to the American people to choose whether they want to starve or not! I think some people are just lazy, so they can't blame it on anyone but themselves.

  11. i think it is american to let people starve becasue people have so much opportunity to turn their lives around and the government already has enough issues with other, more important necessaties for america. though i think america should still have some homeless shelters but not too many so that it will push them to get out of the hole they're in.

  12. Yes, it is american to let people starve, because we let homeless people go without food for days. Many of us think they might be trying to buy liquor and we mistrust them. Our government lets them live on the streets and there is a limit to how many people can say in homesless settlers. I think it's the governments job to take care of our poor.

Well, no it is not, and in a way, America does help the poor. America helps the poor because America is not cruel, America goes into poor peoples shoes, and its hard. Poor people just are simply BORN with it: a poor couple with a baby, he or she grows up poor because the parents never got them to school or nothing, but its not really their fault, they were born with it. America does help those people. Like for examlpe Saint Marry's dining hall, adopting, adopting a family, shelters, etc. So, America doesn't comletley let people starve, America helps out! America helps out to the point where its like, not too much but yet, America does help.
