The Ku Klux Klan

The first branch of the Ku Klux Klan was established in Pulaski, Tennessee, in May, 1866. A year later a general organization of local Klans was established in Nashville in April, 1867. Most of the leaders were former members of the Confederate Army and the first Grand Wizard was Nathan Forrest, an outstanding general during the American Civil War. During the next two years Klansmen wearing masks, white cardboard hats and draped in white sheets, tortured and killed black Americans and sympathetic whites. Immigrants, who they blamed for the election of Radical Republicans, were also targets of their hatred. Between 1868 and 1870 the Ku Klux Klan played an important role in restoring white rule in North Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia. What effect did Reconstruction have on blacks? Were they better off after Reconstruction than they were before the Civil War?

  1. I think the KKK was wrong for what they did, they would blame blacks for what they did. If they killed someone they would blame it on the nearest person. I think they were better during civil war because they barely got picked on. They still killed blacks and sabotaged whites, but it was more better during the Civil War.

  2. The effect was that they were portrayed as civilized by the Europeans.I feel that blacks were better off after Reconstruction, but it wasn't apparent until much later. In the beginning of Reconstruction they didn't speak out against the horrible behavior. As they began to protest things got much better for them.

  3. The effect of Reconstruction on blacks were that they were racists towards whoever was not white and thought that they were better than everyone else. They were better off after because things started to changed.
